Todays topic was Health and Safety however I was really ill so wasnt able to attend, however my friends informed me of what I had missed. They told me that they had been given a scenario about pupils going on a school trip and were asked what things would be necessary for the trip to take place. Some of these things consisted of a register, consent form, risk assessment, parent helpers CRB's etc.
They were then also given the scenario where they were the chair of the governing body, after this they discussed the advantages and disadvantages of strategic planning. I was disapointed that I was unable to attend, however I was able to copy up notes.

Guest speaker Dr Russell Grigg 16/01/12

Today we were provided with a guest speaker because Andy is ill. Our guest speaker was called Dr Russell Grigg he talked to us about Estyn and what they do. He was very interesting and provided us with a number of facts which we didnt know beforehand. The role of Estyn is to inspect the quality and standards in education in Wales, this includes all education settings. They also provide adivce to the Welsh Assembly Government about the quality of education and their training. I really enjoyed his lecture and wrote down loads of notes on the topic, it gave me an insight into all the other jobs available within the education system.

Visual communication - personal meanings

In todays seminar we were given the task of bring in five items that had important meanings to me, I brought in my charm braclet and a key ring which my mum gave to me for my 18th birthday. As each charm had a different meaning for me I used them individualy to add up to my five items. we were then sent out of the class to use tape to create a design on the floor, my group created a star which we then placed our items inside. We then had to discuss what each item meant to us and why we had brought them in. When everyone had spoken we were told to stand up and walk around everyone elses designs and if we found anything interesting that we didnt understand we had to ask what it was. By doing this we were learning to communicate visually which is a key skill.

Today was our first time doing visual communication, we first sat down and discussed a number of paintings and how they came across to us.

The first image we observed was the scream, our class had very different views and we all put our ideas toghether to figure out how the painting is being protrayed.
The second image is known as 'ich habe angst' this confused our class at first as we didnt understand the purpose of it, however after it being explained it to us we all began to gain an understanding of its significance.
We the watched a short clip on youtube called the big shave by Martin Scorseses, it was very different to what I was expecting and showed a man cutting himself with a razor and slowly bleeding to death. I found this clip very unusual and didnt at all understand the purpose of it. However it was meant to be a propoganda against the Vietnam war, as it would disturb the American people to see a young white male trying to practically kill himself.
